It is intended for stable, non-emergency patients — someone returning home to another state after treatment, or moving to a hospital nearer family for continued care. The patient must be well enough to travel a scheduled journey in a train coach rather than a clinical environment.

When road or air is the better answer

For anything urgent or unstable, this is the wrong service and we will say so. A road ICU or ALS ambulance is the answer within Karnataka and for shorter intercity runs. Where distance is great and the patient cannot tolerate a long journey, an air ambulance is the appropriate option despite the cost.

SaveLife does not operate trains or own coaches. Berth and coach availability, fares and boarding are governed entirely by Indian Railways, and we cannot guarantee a reservation. What we do is coordinate the booking, the medical arrangements and the ground ambulances around whatever the railways can confirm.

Confirmed in writing before we proceed

Because so much depends on what the railways release, we quote each transfer case by case and confirm it to you in writing before anything is committed. If a provider quotes you a firm berth and a firm figure before a reservation exists, ask what they are basing it on.

Medical support on board — and its limits

Onboard medical support is arranged to match the patient, and a medical escort travels where the case calls for one. What matters is being honest about the setting: a train coach is not an intensive-care environment, and we do not present it as one. The support that travels suits a stable patient on a scheduled journey, with the escort and equipment agreed case by case rather than assumed. If the patient needs the intervention an ICU ambulance provides, rail is the wrong choice and we will recommend road or air.

Bed to bed — the two station legs

The train is the middle of the journey, not the whole of it. The patient has to reach the departure station from a hospital or home, and travel from the destination station to the receiving hospital or house at the other end. Both are road ambulance work. SaveLife arranges the Bengaluru station leg directly and coordinates the ambulance at the destination, so the handovers are planned rather than improvised. Which vehicle is used on those legs depends on the patient in the same way as any other transfer.

What affects the cost

We do not publish train ambulance prices. The charge is largely pass-through — the rail fare and reservation charges set by Indian Railways — plus our coordination fee, and it is quoted case by case and confirmed in writing before we proceed. What moves the total is the class and type of accommodation the railways can release, the distance, whether a medical escort travels, the equipment the patient needs during transit, and the two road ambulance legs at either end.

If plans change

Rail fare and reservation charges follow Indian Railways cancellation rules, and whatever the railways refund for that ticket and timing is passed on to you in full, without deduction. Our own coordination fee and any medical escort charge are refunded in full if you cancel more than 24 hours before departure, and half if you cancel within 24 hours. The station ambulance transfers are charged under our normal road ambulance terms.
