Which ambulance a dialysis run usually needs

If the trip is planned rather than an emergency, and the patient is stable but cannot travel sitting up in a car, ask us about a BLS ambulance: oxygen-equipped basic life support with a trained attendant, on either a Maruti Eeco or a Tempo Traveller. Both are air-conditioned. Tell us about the access at the pickup point and how much room will be needed inside, and ask which of the two suits your trip when you book.

If the treating team has said the patient needs cardiac monitoring, infusion pumps or ventilator support during the move, that is an ALS or ACLS vehicle instead, on a Tempo Traveller, with a trained paramedic. Tell us that on the call, so the right vehicle is sent from the start rather than after it has set off.

We cannot advise you on which level of care a patient needs. Ask the nephrologist or the dialysis unit staff, then tell us what they said. We will send what matches.

Round trips, waiting and the return leg

A dialysis session runs for hours, so families usually ask about one of two arrangements: the ambulance waiting at the centre and taking the patient home afterwards, or a separate booking for the return leg. Ask on the call which of these can be arranged for your session and your timing.

Say clearly what you want when you call, so that it is settled before the vehicle moves rather than in a hospital porch. If the unit has asked for oxygen on the way back when it was not needed on the way in, say that too.

Dialysis is rarely a one-off. What the trip costs

The fare is distance-based. It is worked out from a slab table using the actual road distance for your route, and the final figure is calculated using the pricing rules in force at that moment and shown to you before you confirm the booking. That is why there is no number printed on this page — the distance, the vehicle and whether air conditioning is used all affect it, and a figure published today would mislead someone reading in six months. What we do not do

• We do not perform dialysis. There is no dialysis machine in the ambulance, and no such thing as a session run on board. We move the patient; the centre treats them.
• We do not give medical advice, and our crew will not change or advise on medication, fluids or diet.
• We will not quote you an arrival time in minutes. Ring us and ask what is available at that moment for your pickup.
• We have no arrangement with any particular dialysis centre or hospital, and we do not take you to one over another.
• Bengaluru is our verified operating city. A dialysis patient who needs moving to another city can be handled on request — describe the journey on the call and we will tell you what is possible rather than guess.
